Eirian and Rath exchanged glances and left the kitchen, stopping briefly to squeeze her hand and shoulder.

“I’m sure you will want to freshen up before Braith comes down. There will be time for a shower and a bit of rest, but we must start the ritual,” Rev told her as they went to his basement office. “I had this room thrown together in the last two days to mimic the requirements noted in the Book of Night. It was a storeroom before… not the one you were in when the shadows attacked,” he added hastily. “I needed a place close to my office, which is where we will center the realm opening. It will afford you and Braith privacy. I have already put the talismans… and such in place.”

He led her through his basement office, into the second room with the paintings and podiums, and then through another door she hadn’t seen the night she and Braith ran to hide.

She was taken aback to see Sieffre holding a white rat in the room when she thought it would be just her and Rev. The chamber was big and lit with wall lamps, but the stone walls made it feel like a dungeon. Behind Sieffre was a stone altar, the width of a door. One fluffy beige blanket was folded neatly on the edge and on top of it was a silver dagger with a glinting precious stone base.

“We just built the altar,” Rev said hurriedly. “We don’t always have a macabre sacrifice set up in our house.” But Salomé was more alarmed by the pentagram painted on the floor, bedecked with black candles at different points. She took a sharp breath, and her eyes flew to Rev’s in alarm.

“It’s a symbol that means nothing to us.” He paled.

“This is making me deeply uncomfortable.” Salomé folded her arms and hunched her shoulders as her chest sank inwards.

“We are walking in the ways of the fallen seraphim, but we are not here to join his path or become one of his called. We are doing this to fight against him. Sometimes, you must venture into the territory of your enemies if you wish to defeat them. Think of it in that way.” Rev told her, but he didn’t look entirely convinced himself.

In front of the altar were two white A4 pieces of paper with handwritten notes. “These are the pages I copied from the Book of Night.” He led her to stand before it.

Every nerve within her burned and her mind screamed, this is satanic. You are running straight into Satan’s plan for you, but she pushed it down. Nothing in the room would tear her heart away from the Almighty.

“All these… items,” Rev looked at the floor with a measure of unease. "Are from the Daughter of Night bible, which is ancient and obscure. We’re unsure if they actually work towards the ceremony or if they are purely decorative and whimsical. But, we don’t have enough information to take a chance and leave them out.
